Deafblind means a student has both a hearing difference and a visual impairment that together affect how they learn and communicate. Even if the hearing difference or visual impairment alone is mild, the combination can make learning more challenging. Some visual impairments are progressive, meaning vision may worsen over time, and students may receive services early to prepare for future changes. Students who are deafblind need specialized supports to help them communicate, move safely, and access learning in school. Services are based on the student’s unique needs and how their hearing and vision impact learning.
